2009 CONFEDERATION CUP DRAW:

SPAIN GETS "EASY" GROUP
Group draws were held in South Africa for next years Confederation Cup. The best from each continent will battle it out for the title. The competition will take place in South Africa on June 14 - 28 2009. SPAIN, the current European Champions, fell into GROUP A along with host South Africa, Irak & New Zealand.
GROUP B is more complicated with
Italy, Brazil, Egypt & USA

Spain kicks off with its first game on June 14 against New Zealand

REAL MADRID TRANSFER RUMOURS 2008/09:

KEIRRISON JOINS THE LIST
According to "As", 19 year old Brazilian revelation & forward KEIRRISON is on the list of players that REAL MADRID look to strengthen its depleted forward line in the Winter market. The youngster is currently with Brazilian Club CORITIBA & will
talk with Real Madrid after December 7th when the Brazilian season comes to its end. Stay tuned! However, two names have gained plenty of strength in the speculation
stakes locally. They are Argentine forward & BENFICA player DI MARIA & Dutch International &
AJAX forward HUNTELAAR. The latter will not be easy as Ajax will not be keen to lose him mid season, but 20M€ may convince them. The former is reluctant to leave BENFICA if he is to spend time on the bench at Madrid, he prefers to play & if Benfica is the place so be it.

REAL MADRID’S MARCELO IS PINK PANTHER
REAL MADRID has its own version of the Pink Panther in left back Brazilian International MARCELO. Fellow teammate Fabio Cannavaro "takes the mick" out of Marcelo over his pink boots. Very fetching!

REAL MADRID FLYS FOR SCHWEINSTEIGER
The 24 year old BAYERN MUNICH midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER finishes his contract June 30 2009, making him eligible & attractive to all the mayor Clubs. Spanish daily "As" state REAL MADRID officials with fly out to Munich &
talk to the Club & player. However, this has tinges of the Cristiano Ronaldo attempt. Top
Munich
brass Karl Heinz Rummenige has commented that the player is a "born
& bred" (Germans love to say this) Bayern player & the Club will do everything to keep the talented player. Bayern may consider doubling his salary to 6M€/year to convince Bastian to stay. Real
Madrid
will soon exhibit its proposal, along with other interested Clubs like Juventus, Inter, Arsenal & Liverpool. Ahhhhh, how wonderful to be young & a brilliant Football player.
Stay tuned for developments!

TENNIS 2008:

SPAIN DEFEATS ARGENTINA FOR ITS 3rd DAVIS CUP

FERNANDO VERDASCO was substituted at the last moment – his team mate & higher ranking player - David Ferrer to take the winning tie against Argentine JOSE ACASUSO 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to give SPAIN its 3rd DAVIS CUP. It was simply an amazing comeback from the Spaniard after the Argentine was 2 - 1 ahead & just wore himself out by attempting to halt the Spaniards attacks. Spain won the 2008
Davis Cup 1-3 & all this without Nº1 World Ranked player Rafael Nadal.

It was precisely the announcement that Rafael Nadal would not play due to his knee injury that made
Spain
the "underdogs". The Argentinians were at home with crowd support & the Spaniards were lower ranked. But the Spanish team’s effort to lift itself up after losing the first tie, via Feliciano Lopez who won Del Potro in the 2nd
to equalize. The vital doubles victory put
Spain ahead psychologically & put pressure on Argentina
.

Fernando Verdasco went out with the advantage & with excellent tennis gave his country the victory & the Davis Cup. A historic win for this young team, congratulations to
Argentina who were fabulous opponents.

Spanish Match Review

C.F Lliria v C.D At. Museros

16th November 2008

By Peter Hardwick

Following Lliria’s 1-1 draw at CD Torrent the team were able to retain their fourth place league position. They were hoping for full points against visitors Museros who brought a large contingent of support with them.

Museros pushed forward from the start with the Lliria defence under pressure. They worked hard and accurately as a team, something the home side lacked during the early stages. A good cross from left back Angel Luis saw Joree heading just over the bar. Lliria counterattacked with Julio twice finding Ruben with good passes, the impressive right winger sending in good crosses which were well collected by Andres in the visiting goal. Julio then found Bernat in a good position whose 20 yard shot was turned round for a corner. Lliria continued to attack with Carlos Navarro and Santi having fierce shots charged down by defenders. Half time arrived goalless with Julio and Rueben the pick of the home side, but the visitors were more creative and had more attempts at goal.

Five minutes into the second half should have bought the opening goal to Museros. A neat four man move left Lliria’s defence wide open and left Javindon with only Sergio to beat but the Lliria keepers made an excellent save to deny the opposing forward. Back came Lliria, Carlos Navarro went close with a curling shot following a long run by Rafa. Bernat made a strong run beating three defenders before finding Mateo whose shot from point blank range was saved by Andres. Right back Santi was now attacking at every opportunity, but the visitors counter attacked down the right and an awkward bouncing ball reached Raba whose perfect snap shot from 15 yards gave Sergio no chance. Lliria pushed everyone into attack seeking an equaliser, five free kicks in succession put pressure on the Museros defence, but they held firm to gain a splendid and worthy victory.

Final score C.F Lliria 0 – CD At. Museros 1

Javea Green Bowls Club – Weekly Round Up for 29th November with Alan Phillips
Sponsored by MATRIX 35 finance

This week started on Sunday, with the completion of the rained off Winter League match at BBC. In much better conditions Derek Eldon, Sheri Fletcher, Dennis Reeves & Lynne Eldon, overturned a 6 shot deficit to pick up 2 points, with a 17-16 win. Two more points were earned by Nick Cole, Brian Manser, Ken Tebbenham & Pat Metcalfe, who all worked extremely hard to eventually gain a comfortable win. Unfortunately the other two sides lost & the shot difference went down with them, but on reflection, collecting 4 points at BBC was quite satisfying.
Congratulations to the Quartz, who definitely earned the “team of the week” tag, with a stunning 9-1 defeat of the table-topping BBC Lions. As you would expect when you get two strong teams opposing each other, at the halfway stage there was no evidence of what was to come, as both teams led in two matches. The first team over the winning line was Jonathan Barr, Brian Rich & Terry Wheeler, who enjoyed a 23-16 victory. They were closely followed by Jenny Rich, Norman Richardson & Graham Muir with a single shot margin in their favour. The team of Carol Davey, Stan Staines & Peter Anderton had a marvellous comeback from 6-15 down after 10 ends to pick up a point with a 16-16 draw. With everyone looking on in anticipation, the final match saw Alison Brown, making her first appearance in the scoring sides, Pauline Anderton & Ken Davey, come home by the skin of their teeth with another one shot victory. It is still early stages, but this 9-1 win should put Quartz top of the Northern League at the moment.
So we moved on to Wednesday & our match at home to El Cid was wiped out by more heavy rain & will be played next week.
Thursday saw the all Javea Green affair with the Opals playing against the Onyx, on what has been described by our new Opal scribe Colin Houghton, as one of those “we must be mad” days! If the biting wind wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits, just add the pouring rain to the mix & you get the idea. Despite all of this the Opals emerged with 6 points, thanks to Jan Straughan, Bob Foley & Anne Moon, who secured a 16 shot win & the overall shot difference. The other 2 points were gained in a remarkable fight back that saw Pat Robbins, Martin Hughes & Trevor Neale come from 17-7 down after 13 ends, to win 25-18 with 14 shots won on the last 3 ends! Three friendly games were played but only one lasted the 18 ends, the other two decided that enough was enough & adjourned to the bar, to watch the monsoon whilst sipping a warming cocoa.

Enjoy your bowling.

El cid Bowling
In the Northern League this week, Sabres played at home against Albir Bears. They won on two rinks and with a convincing 24 - 4 win by Sara Hamer, Fred Rensen and Vernon Graham, Sabres managed to gain the overall shot difference giving them 6 points to Albir’s 4 points. Well done, keep it up Sabres. The Swords played away at BBC against the Jaguars. It was a rain affected game in more ways than one. The rain slowed the speed of the green and all home advantage disappeared making the pace more to the Swords liking allowing them to win on all rinks scoring a resounding victory and 10 points when the game was abandoned after 61 ends. Well done everyone!  The Winter League game against Javea Green was postponed due to bad weather.
