THE REAL TEST FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES
What a bad few weeks we have had for rain! I know we need it as a country but many people have been affected by the torrential downpours in their homes, garages, under-builds etc… The real test of the insurance company begins, of course the first hurdle is to be able to understand the policy and what exactly you are covered for, that´s assuming you have all this in English.
There is no reason to struggle anymore. There are several reputable insurance companies in Spain who provide all their documentation in English, Liberty Seguros being one of them, who my company, have an excellent relationship with.
It is better to know what you are insured for in the beginning not when you need to put in a claim. I strongly advise that when you are obtaining quotations ask if ALL the documentation is in English, quotation, conditions, policy and if there is a Home Assistance Service…is this in English? It is very important that you receive this level of service. To elaborate, Liberty Seguros provide as part of their Home Assistance Service the provision of qualified tradespersons to undertake emergency repairs to your home in the event of an accident, including security guards if deemed necessary.
The other common factor I have encountered is under insuring. If you insure your home for lower than its real value, this could basically mean simply saving on the premium but when you come to claim, you will only be compensated according to the insured value and not for the real value of the objects claimed for.
Therefore, it is essential that the values of the Buildings and Contents be accurate. My team of trained insurance consultants can advise you but it is always a good idea to do a “walk through” of your home and list the contents, including the value it would cost to replace this now.
The Contents aspect with Liberty is at the market value of replacement as new, without taking into account depreciation for use or age (not applicable to computers and their accessories more than 2 year old). Liberty also cover damage to food, medicine or pharmaceuticals that are in the refrigerator or freezer (up to the value of 300euros) when there is a breakdown (this applies to appliances less than 10 years old) or the electricity supply is down.
Liberty specialise in All-Risk policies, particularly important if you have expensive pieces of jewellery, antiques, rugs etc...
