During the many years I have been advising and selling private health insurance, I often mention either in my articles or verbally to clients, that one of the most important issues within a policy are the benefits.

It never ceases to amaze me that people sign a legal binding contract without fully understanding the conditions, roles and benefits.

Some people do take time to research the various products on the market, but surprisingly can miss the main issues. It is no good at all just taking the word of a representative. This will not have any bearing on claims or disputes that may happen after joining.

There is no point at all in leaving everything to chance; life doesn’t seem to work out that way, especially when it comes to a very important issue, your health. This is Spain and the rules and regulations are very different than you may have been used to in the UK. Most of us in the UK do not get involved in private health insurance; therefore, it often comes as a shock when we find out that we need health insurance if we are to be covered in Spain.

Where to start? Obviously the local newspapers are a good way to start, or the internet.  However, these are adverts so be careful you are not taken in by all the promises.

The main issues to check are” Guaranteed for Life” and “The age you join is the age you stay”. Unless the adverts are followed up by these two vital statements you have not got them. There is more to know and understand, but I haven’t the space here to inform you.

Better to try and find out before you join a scheme, rather than find out when you seek authorisation for treatment. How distressing to have to go to hospital and discover your cover is not adequate or no treatment is available for that particular problem.

The other issue to take care of, especially with Spanish companies, is the waiting period and indisputable years. Again, make sure you fully accept and understand what these mean. The implications here could be horrendous if a serious illness is confirmed, and treatment is either not available or is withdrawn before completion.

Once again I say these words “Take care, and make sure you are 100% aware of your entitlements, rules and regulations of the policy chosen”. Two other important issues are; “is the policy a specially designed to meet with the needs of ex pats?” and “Do you have easy access to a claims department and help line?”.

My company has fully trained policy advisors to help you through the minefield as well as a full time administrator, Mandy. She is there to support you with authorisations, queries and if necessary, translation of doctors reports for you. Look forward to hearing from you.
