Recently I was invited to take a look around Terrarotja Garden Centre in Chiva. At the entrance to the building they have a beautiful display of coloured barks, pots and fountains.   On arrival, I was met by Laura Fortea Moreno the Manageress whom lucky for me speaks English.

Laura informed me that the history of Terrarotja dates back to 35 years ago when a small group of companies in Chiva needed an industrial sized manufacturing site to share warehouses and factories. In 1994 the site was sold to a manufacturer of ceramic pots and once again in 2000.  Finally in 2004 the present owners from Scotland purchased the site.

While pots are no longer produced on site, they remain a key product with Terrarotja acting as one of the biggest importers of pots in Spain.  Their principle sourcing countries include China, Vietnam and Malaysia.  The company employs buyers whom continually research the market and seek new garden products.  Currently all imports arrive in the warehouse in Chiva and are shipped throughout Spain.  In the future they plan for the shipments to be delivered directly from the exporting country to garden centres in Spain.

Terrarotja also has a wide range of low priced and high quality garden decorations and furniture. The layout of the centre comprises of a huge selection of pots outside and two large showrooms inside.  The displays include hanging baskets, stone benches, fountains, sunshades and many designs of tables and chairs. I was told that they were very successful at this year’s Alicante Home and Garden Exposition with their modern collection of products and was featured on the trade show television channel.

Amazed by the size of some of the pots, I wondered how I would take them home. Laura assured me that they provide a home delivery service to as far as Alicante and even have English-speaking staff available.

Their plans for the future too are impressive. Later this year, they plan to open an extensive garden centre with a café on site here at Terrarotja.

I certainly enjoyed my visit to Terrarotja and I would certainly recommend the factory shop. It is very pleasurable to walk around and offers many excellent products.  I should add, there are also monthly promotions items ensuring incredible value for money.

My last question to Laura was whether she could recommend the summer seasons “must have” products. Torn by the question she recommended the free standing aluminium and polyester retractable sunshade and, the Errinton Reay round iron stone pots with handles finished in dark brown.
