The Yorkshire Rose Inland Trader Darts League Champions 2007
The Plough in Villena was the venue; Steve and Sheryl were the accommodating hosts who opened their doors to all the darts league riff raff. The nights events kicked off and we ploughed (no pun intended) through the semi-finals of the singles and doubles knockout competition that were started at the end of last year. Also running was a cunningly devised doubles charity knock out which gave everyone the chance to claim bragging rights for their bar. Obviously you needed to be a special kind of team to win this but more on that later. As the night wore on and Chelsea went one nil down in Valencia, yes of course we had the football on too, the players started to fall by the wayside. Everyone’s dead cert for a trophy was Bar Pastors secret weapon, Toni. Anyone who’s had the misfortune to play him this season will know that the games are quick and he completely destroys you – I speak from experience, but someone must have spiked his drink and he didn’t make the final. For a friendly darts night the competition was as fierce as ever, perhaps the glittering array of trophies that were arranged on the main stage were an added incentive. The first final to be played was between Graham from Bar Pastor and Paul from Yorkshire Rose. We always knew they were good players and now they were proving it in front of a packed out hall. Unfortunately, there could only be one winner and the man from Alberic nicked it at the end. Congratulations to Graham who can now say he’s the best player in the league and well done to Paul who I’m sure won’t mind not winning, after all he’s a Leeds fan so he’ll be used to disappointment anyway. Next on were the doubles, Steve and Tony from The Plough looking to capitalize on their home advantage against Neil and Gerald from the Yorkshire Rose. A great recipe for a classic match with Neil and Tony providing the youth and Steve and Gerald supplying the good looks. Another closely run match saw Neil and Gerald victorious, well they couldn’t lose both matches could they! Last up was the Charity Knockout, after some great matches in which Jill from Bar Alexandre controversially tried to jinx me during our semi-final, we had our two finalists. The atmosphere was tense as Bob and I from the Ontinyent team had the daunting task of trying to beat Steve and Richard from Pastor B. Now what I love about darts is the scientific talent versus beer equation, no beer and it’s difficult, too much beer and it’s embarrassing. Thankfully Bob and I had our strategy spot on and much to everyone’s amazement, including our own found ourselves ten minutes later as the first recipients of the Inland Trader Charity Cup. Guest speaker, Mike “OXO Man” Redfern had everyone laughing with a selection of jokes during the Trophy presentation with everyone receiving a team trophy and the night’s finals winners accepting their individual trophies. I guess Mike, who has appeared in many of favourite TV shows will always be best remembered as the OXO dad and likewise me and Bob will always be remembered as the Charity winners, so please don’t go on about it too much, thanks. On the subject of thanking people, where to start? Obviously Lou and Mel for their many hours of planning and organisation. Mel was unable to make it to the night as she doubled as the Official Inland Trader Babysitter! Steve and Sheryl who did a fantastic job of keeping everything running smoothly and preparing a beautiful buffet, the quiche was superb and I’m actually eating a stolen piece now. Thanks also to Mike Redfern who’s available for weddings, birthdays and Bar Mitzvahs and to Terry from Bar Pastor who stepped up on stage and took the unenviable job of chalking the finals. Brilliant night was had by all, without the crowd trouble that marred the Man Utd match and I for one am looking forward to the start of the next season on April 24th. To those of you who came, thanks and we hope you had a great night, to those of you that didn’t, we’ll you missed a cracker! By Gary Collins Interested in joining the league call Inland Trader Today.
