Housetraining a puppy when you are not at home Part 1

House training a puppy requires the 3 P’s. Patience, persistence and practice and it takes up to six months. Why? Because your puppy is changing every day by growing and eating more so this logically means that your puppy wants to go to the toilet more. So this is when feeding, walking and the 3 P’s come into force and then it’s the big ´R´- Routine.

There are certain specific housetraining tips that you should follow when you’re at home and some others when you are not at home.

Tips when you are not at home.

Sort a small enclosed area for the puppy, which will be “puppy proof.” Make sure that the puppy cannot escape.

Cover all the area with paper.

Put puppy food/water/toys in the area as well as a bed.

Be prepared to clean up a lot of poo and torn up paper.

Your puppy will soil the whole area at first, but will gradually use the same spot. When this happens you can start taking some of the paper away. When you get down the “puppy” spot just keep putting paper down in this area so he knows that he can do his business here.

Once your puppy has learned to eliminate only on the papers try to move it about an inch daily towards a location of your choice, preferably near the door leading outside

Once your puppy has had its vaccinations he should be fully housetrained and then you need to teach him to go outside so remove the paper.

Praise your puppy and give it treats as a reward for going outside

If your puppy has a long time on its own, he will want to go! Leave paper down in this case and do not shout or smack the puppy because you will have to start the process all over again.

Well good luck, if you need any more information or help, give Lezsonja’s Boarding Kennels a call and ask for Sonia on 677343653.
