Why does my dog eat poo?
Copography, or eating faeces is a natural dog habit among dogs which owners find utterly disgusting. Faeces found in cat litter trays are a favourite treat.
Causes
Dogs that eat faeces usually do not have a dietary deficiency, though this is a common misconception among owners, while others believe they eat them if they are anxious or stressed. Another theory about this agonising behaviour is that coprography is a hereditary trait passed down by the dog’s cousins, the wolves and the coyotes, who often eat faeces when food is in short supply.
Solutions
● Train the dog to understand this behaviour is forbidden.
● Try pouring Tabasco sauce on the stools
●Clean up your garden/poo area every time your dog has a poo.
●Do not let him or her sniff it after they have been.
If your dog continues to be fond of faeces start saying sharply the command “off”. When walking your dog on a lead don’t let it sniff around, pull it away with a short tug, then use praise such as “good dog” accompanied with a treat. Now let your dog off if you are able and see if it goes back to the poo. If so, then repeat the commands putting it straight back on a lead. Keep trying; don’t give up and you will get there. You need time and lots of patience but this training works wonders.
Can I just mention that I am still getting phone calls regarding blood tests for cast and dogs when re-entering the UK. Yes you need to have your pets blood tested with the result papers. This process takes 6 months. If you might have to go back to the UK then get this done now to save leave your pet behind for 6 months.
