How to stop your dog digging… no you can't chop its legs off… Is your dog digging? Yes? Well have you asked yourself WHY? Stop shouting and take a deep breath. A dog digs for a definite reason. 1. Entertainment 2. Seeking prey 3. Comfort or protection. 4. Drawing attention 5. Escaping Many dogs dig to bury or retrieve bones or toys that they have hidden. On hot days dogs dig to make a hole to lie in to escape the heat. Terriers dig to catch rodents or other creatures in your garden. Dogs like to get exercise and this may be the way they find doing it being bored with being in the same place. Ask yourself some questions When does your dog dig? Is it when it is left alone or when you give them a bone or a toy? Does your dog dig in the same spot? Is he digging so it can escape? After you have figured out why your dog is digging, it is easier for you to find a suitable solution to the problem. For instinctive diggers, you must try to find an acceptable spot for them to dig. So they know they can dig play with them in the area you have made be it a sand pit or a place at the bottom of a garden and put treats in it for your dog to find. If you don’t have the space for this, give your dog extra attention by playing ball with it or taking them for extra or longer walks. If your dog likes digging plants you will have to train your dog to leave them alone. A short sharp no repeated persistently and praise works wonders.
