HOW TO TAME A CHINCHILLA

With a little patience (and bribery) you can get your chinchilla comfortable with handling.

HERE'S HOW

1. Give a new chinchilla time to adjust by keeping maintenance and interaction to a minimum.
2. Move slowly and speak softly around your chinchilla.
3. Limit interaction to the evening as that is when chinchillas are naturally more active and therefore more receptive.
4. Initially sit next to cage to acclimatize chinchilla to your presence.
5. Offer chinchilla a treat (raisin) when it approaches cage bars.
6. Once taking a treat this way from your fingers, start trying to do it through the cage door.
7. Once you have managed that, you must then put your hand in palm up with treat on it to see if you can get your chinchilla to sit in your palm and take the treat.
8. Once you feel comfortable with the chinchilla, try and let him climb and jump around you arm, still in cage.
9. Then when you really feel that you and your chinchilla has bonded, try and touch its back gently, if chinchilla is fine about that try to hold him, still in cage.
10. Right here goes open cage door, stand with a treat at cage let chinchilla come out in its own time. When it comes out don’t panic just make sure doors and windows are shut.
11. Do not chase chinchilla around the room trying to catch it, leave it, try and get it a treat so it comes to you, then hold chinchilla and put back in cage with a treat. Remember chinchilla like there own space that’s there cage they will go back on there own.
12. You must do this every night until it all becomes easy for you and your chinchilla, don’t give up.

TIPS

1.  Getting a 3-4 month old chinchilla that has been handled will make your task easier.
2.  Use lots of treats and do it step by step, make sure you are sure of  you chinchilla before trying next step, do not be afraid of chinchilla they will play on it.
3.  Always with bare hands no gloves.

That just leaves me to say good luck, any problems please call Sonia at Lezsonjas boarding kennels  on 677343653
