This week has seen a lot of Music about in the area and more to come over the Xmas period, so hopefully this will be a lively column in the next few issues.
Friday night we were invited down to Petit Bar Blue – the English Bar with a French name in the Spanish town of Oliva – to quote their advertising. They don’t often have music but the festive season has spurred them on. Tonight it was the turn of Elvis and Big O (that’s Roy Orbison to you and I) in the form of John Davidson.
Just off the N332 opposite El Rebollets, Oliva, although small, a big welcome awaits from the ever smiling Nina, supported by the effervescent Kelly – she of La Garrotta fame – and working the floors, the delectable Nicky (that makes her sound like a lap dancer but she was providing waitress service) and of course Ian. It was good to see some old faces from La Garrotta – Brian, Audrey and hubby, George and Ray, and some new ones too.
John started his performance with some golden oldies, such as “You Don’t Need me”, “Mustang Sally”, “My Little Runaway”, “Under the moon of love”, and “Back in the USSR”. He then ended the session with a medley of Xmas songs to stir up the crowd. After taking a well earned rest John went to the toilets and was not seen again until much later on. In the meantime out came Roy Orbison (I thought he had died a few years ago but clearly I was mistaken) dressed in black from head to toe and with the full length shades and sideburns.
Cracking straight into “Crying” “Only the Lonely”, “Pretty Woman” and “Sweet Baby” – amongst others, John did a very good job and does sound like the great man himself. Then as quickly as he came Roy went off again – into the same toilet John had disappeared to earlier.
After a brief pause the drum roll started and came none other than Elvis Presley, who burst onto the scene singing “That’s all right momma”. Dressed in a full white suit, which he had specially made in Spain, he looked very much like the King, and sounded eerily like him. He went through his repertoire singing “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck”, “Don’t Be Cruel”, “The Wonder Of You”, “Suspicious Minds” and many more before launching into “Jailhouse Rock” and finishing with Hound Dog”. By this time the crowd had started to shake a hoof, no mean feat considering the floor space.
Then Elvis went the same way as Roy and John reappeared. Perhaps he knows something we don’t.
Petit Bar Blue is a great little place and Nina puts on Music every 6 weeks, however more is planned over the next few weeks. Wednesday 21st is John Ramone, Xmas Eve there is a Karaoke, Quiz and raffle hosted by none other than Carol– so lots of fun for all. New Years Eve is party time at Bar Blue, so don’t miss out.
