Sometimes a word can have one or more different meanings, just as they can in the English language. If you come across these words try to learn both definitions at the same time. It's an easy way to extend your vocabulary with only a little extra effort. Then use the word in both contexts to practise. Here are some common words that have two very useful meanings.
1. The verb llevar…. Means to wear and to take. Example: llevo los niños al colegio todos los días. I take the children to school every day. Hoy llevo unos pantalones nuevos I’m wearing new trousers today
2. The verb salir….Means to go out and to leave or exit. Example: Salgo con mis amigos los sábados I go out with my friends on Saturdays Salgo de casa a las ocho par ir a trabajar I leave the house at eight to go to work.
3. The verb montar….Means to assemble and ride Example: Me gusta montar a caballo I like horse riding. Para montar este armario necesitas una hoja de instrucciones. To assemble this cupboard you need an instructions sheet.
4. The noun Pila….Means sink and battery Example: La pila esta al lado del baño The sink is next to the bath Esta camera necesita nuevas pilas This camera needs new batteries
5.The noun Polvo….Means dust or powder Example: Polvos para bébés Baby powder Hay mucho polvo en la mesa. There is a lot of dust on the table
6.The noun presupuesto….Means budget and quote Example: No me entra en el presupuesto That’s out of my budget Este es el presupuesto para la reparación This is the quote for the repair.
7. The noun gato….Means cat and car jack. Example: Tengo un gato negro. I have a black cat. Guardo el gato en el maletero. I store the car jack in the boot.
8.The noun pasta….Means pasta and paste also colloquial for money. Example: Tengo poca pasta (Coloquial) I don’t have a lot of money (dough) Lavo los dientes con pasta dentífrica. I clean my teeth with toothpaste.
9. The verb querer….Means to want or love. Example: Quiero un kilo de patatas. I World like a kilo of potatoes. Te quiero. I love you.
10.The verb poner….Means to put/put on and give. Example: Ponme un vaso de agua por favor. Could you give me a glass of water please? Ponte un suéter que hace frió. Put on a jumper because it’s cold.
